33nd Anniversary

Bertha Frank Teague

Mid-America Classic Basketball Tournament

Trophy1

The original Mid-America championship trophy was an impressive gold affair, but was much like most tournament trophies.  Then came a trip to the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 1990 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bertha Frank Teague would receive the first-ever Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Service Award.

While there, Mrs. Teague and Omega Johnson, a former player and lifelong friend, saw the national championship trophy.  It was a sleekly lined pedestal with a brown-colored basketball atop.  Simple, elegant

Omega Johnson was intrigued by the trophy and carried the thought with the first of the new style trophies back home.

“I talked to Mr. Dave Smith, the president of Midwest Trophy,” she said.  “He not only said he could make it, but that he guaranteed no one else in Oklahoma would have one like it.  I noticed that he was smiling about it.  It seems his company made the one we saw in Tennessee!”
